Turnpike Rovers 0 – Shannon Olympic A 1 at Lees Road

SHANNON OLYMPIC A extended their lead in the First Division League on Sunday morning with a hard fought victory over Turnpike Rovers in Lee’s Road.

Played in perfect conditions, Olympic managed to record this important win despite going down to ten men after only 20 minutes when Jimmy Houlihan received two yellow cards in quick succession.

Despite this set back, Olympic bat- tled bravely and were unlucky not to open the scoring 10 minutes later when a clever cross from Eamonn O’Neill found the head of Wayne Regan’s but his effort came back off the upright with the ‘keeper beaten. Turnpike failed to create many chances even with the extra man and Regan’s header was the closest either team came to scoring in the first half.

The second half was another tight affair. However, although they were down to ten men from the first half, Olympic always seemed on top and looked more likely to score.

The only goal of the game came in the 65th minute when a rampant run by full-back Mick O’Connell down the right-hand side enabled him to put a great cross into the Turnpike box for Jason Regan to head home from six yards. It was no more than Olympic deserved.

Olympic did create a number of other chances in the half but their finishing let them down. However, they battled hard and with ten men they earned all three points with a great effort and now sit comfortably at the top of the table with a deserved victory.
