HUNDREDS of acres of hillside went up in flames last night in a blaze which could be seen more than 20 miles away.
More than twenty fire-fighters whit support crews did battle for hours with the inferno, which engulfed a hill south east of Milltown Malbay.
The blaze started in bone-dry scrub under sizzling temperatures which also saw household wells all over the country run dry.
And with yesterday being the hottest day of the year and weekend temperatures in the high twenties, traffic chaos was reported on the coast roads.
